WHAT DOES “PARA” MEAN?
The prefix “Para” comes from Greek and it means “parallel” or “next to.” In Paralympic or Parapan American sports, this term is used to refer to a sport that’s parallel to the conventional version.
In our Games, this adjective represents all people with physical, cognitive, or visual disabilities.
We say “Paralympic” and not “Para Olympic,” because Olympic is a trademark: “Paralympics” or “Paralympic Games.”
We say “Para athlete” to refer to athletes who have some type of disability, being physical, cognitive, or visual.
We use “Para sport” meaning the sports practiced by Para athletes. This term was made official by the Paralympic Committee.

#DidYouKnow that the Paralympic symbol is composed of three agitos, from Latin “I move,” referring to the motto “Spirit in motion”.
