The challenge of the IOC president Thomas Bach for Chile and the support from Harold Mayne-Nicholls: organizing the Olympic Games

The German's proposal was backed by the executive director of Santiago 2023, who said that "if we continue on this path we can host events bigger than the Pan American Games. The people answered, the infrastructure is ready and we need to maintain it".

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, has had a full agenda since his arrival in Chile, participating in a series of events related to the Pan American Games. During his stay in the capital, he has shared moments with various personalities and athletes, which has reflected his support for the Santiago 2023 organization.

On Saturday, the native of Würzburg visited the athletes' home in Cerrillos and praised it: "I can only congratulate Panam Sports and Chile for this Village. Even more when it is a social project from which many lucky families will be able to benefit from these Pan American Games".

The executive, who was a fencer, offered a lecture for the Chefs de Mission, who accompany the delegations of the athletes who are competing in the continental event. After that, he spoke to the press and challenged our country pointing out “My advice would be that once these Games finish successfully, you must start thinking about the next goal. And among them could be an Olympic Games or other events of this nature”.

These words were backed up by Harold Mayne-Nicholls, Chief Executive Officer of Santiago 2023, who said “It is an honor to receive Thomas Bach at the Pan American Village. His words fill us with hope and motivation to continue working in such important sporting events.”

“I think that if we continue this way, we could host the Olympic Games. The people already answered, the infrastructure is ready and we need to maintain it. The Pan Americans are full of life and that proves that in Chile we are ready for bigger events,” added the CEO.
