The Torch Relay program is an activity that aims to share the spirit and energy of the Games, allowing the largest multi-sport event to reach every corner of the country. It involves the journey of the Pan American and Parapan American flame, where different torchbearers will ignite and illuminate with joy and energy as the torches pass through the regions of the country, celebrating the arrival of the Games and transforming Chile into #OurMeetingPoint.
All these great celebrations will culminate at the cauldron in the coliseum of the National Stadium on October 20th, 2023, marking the start of the Pan American Games. As for the Parapan American Games, the Parapan American flame will be lit on November 17th during its respective opening ceremony.
In Pan American Games, the torch is lit in the Ceremonial Center in Teotihuacán, Mexico. The story goes that it was in that place where the gods met and sacrificed to deliver their vital and creative energy to this new era in which we live, giving birth to two elements, Nanáhuatl (Fifth Sun) and Tecuciztécatl (The Moon), symbols that are present in the design of our torches.
Rescuing the Mesoamerican tradition, the torch of the Parapan American Games is related to the birth of the Moon and its lighting in the most remote corners of the Chilean territory, highlighting the natural beauty of a country of contrasts between the Chilean valleys and mountains. The lighting of this torch will take place in the Clarillo River, in the Pirque sector, where a group of muleteer from the great Andean mountain range will light the flame to illuminate the night and continue their journey through our central valley.
At the Pan American Games, the torch symbolizes the rising of the sun and reflects the colors of our territory, forests, glaciers, sea, valleys and desert. This energy, which emerges and summons, will cultivate #OurMeetingPoint as a space to vibrate with sport and in community.
The torch of the Parapan American Games will have the moonlight as its protagonist. It represents an invisible force, capable of moving oceans and controlling tides throughout our territory.
The torch, which includes elements in Braille, will have a metallic texture and alludes to the reddish copper of our country. It will be 66 cm long and weigh 1.5 kg. To light its flame, a metallic lantern will be used, which will keep the fire burning throughout the entire route.
