WHAT ARE THE TRIATHLON COMPETITIONS LIKE?

The swimming test is carried out in open water and all the athletes start together until they reach 1.5 km. Once they get to the first goal, they go to the transition area or T1, which is where they must collect their equipment and prepare for the next test, although they are prohibited from riding the bicycle before positioning themselves on the marking line.

The cycling route is 40 km long and athletes must wear their helmets on it at all times to prevent accidents. Once finished, the athletes will go to the second transition or T2, where they must leave their bicycles in a rack and prepare for the final test.

The last stage is the 10 km race, where each athlete must have their identification numbers visible and whoever manages to cross the finish line first will be the winner.7

THE TRIATHLON AT THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES

In the case of the Pan American Games, the triathlon made its debut at Mar del Plata 1995, and as in the Olympic Games, both genders participated from the beginning. In the Pan American medal table, the United States stands out with five golds.

However, in the last three editions of the Games, Mexico and Brazil have stood out, in the men's competition, with the gold medals for Reinaldo Colucci and Crisaldo Grajales, respectively. The latter stands out for being a two-time champion and one of the outstanding cards for Santiago 2023. While in female, the United States, Chile and Brazil stand out, with the first places going to Sarah Haskins, Barbara Riveros and Luisa Baptista, respectively.

At Lima 2019, for the first time in the history of the Pan American Games, the mixed relay event was held, where Brazil won the gold thanks to the efforts of Luisa Baptista, Kaue Willy, Vittoria Lopes and Manoel Messias, setting a precedent in this sport.
