Goalball is a sport created for people with visual impairment. Here, two teams of three players each face off. Competitors must throw the ball towards the opponent’s goal while their opponents must try to stop it with their whole extended bodies. 

SPORT CLASS

This Paralympic and Parapan American sport is practiced only by people with visual impairment under the following categories: 

• B1: low visual acuity or complete loss of vision, aside from low or no perception of light.

• B2: higher visual acuity compared to athletes who compete under the B1 class or visual field lower than 5 degrees in diameter. 

• B3: clearer visual acuity than B2 athletes or visual field lower than 20 degrees in diameter.

RULES OF THE GAME

Keep it quiet during a game!

• This sport requires a lot of concentration and listening is key because in it a sound ball is used and it contains bells so players know its trajectory and locations during each game. 
• Through power and reaction speed, once the referee says PLAY, players will have only 10 seconds to throw the ball and score a goal to the enemy team. 
• Teams are made of 6 players: three attacking and three defending players.
• The Goalball court is divided into three big areas. The two on each end of the court correspond to each team and one in between. One fundamental rule is that the ball has to at least bounce in each area. 

#DidYouKnow that the court has lines with a prominence to help players to locate themselves in the court. 

LATIN AMERICAN REFERENCE

The male Brazilian team became champion at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. This very country, with both the male and female teams, won gold at the Lima 2019 Parapan Americans Games.
