Santiago 2023 will leave a legacy to Chile!

The Santiago 2023 Organization aims for the Games to be a space to focus on what makes us good and joins us: high performance sports, the community, and sustainability. With that vision in mind, Santiago 2023 wants to leave a legacy related to social, urban, sports, and environmental transformation that is built collectively and that is sustainable in the time.

The Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games are the most important multisport event of the Americas. In this party nearly nine thousand athletes from 41 countries will participate. This milestone will mark a before and after that will allow the promotion of a more democratic agenda that fosters and changes our national sport culture. So, why are our Games important?
Mainly, because of its Legacy Program that we’ll present you below:

One of the engines related to the development of this great event is the concern about the communities, who achieve an essential role before, after, and during the Games.

As a result, #Santiago2023 is getting ready to be a meeting point for both Chilean society and countries of the Americas. At the same time, this event seeks to make history and celebrate an inclusive and inspiring sport meeting that transcends and leaves a legacy of social, urban, sport, and environmental transformation for all the country.

What is legacy?

#Santiago2023 understands legacy as the collective process of building long term, tangible, and intangible benefits that emerge from the development of the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

The main values entail an opportunity to transcend different areas that benefit our country: in matters of gender, diversity, equality, and environmental responsibility.

The social legacy

Within this context, Santiago 2023 seeks to leave its footprint as a social legacy that transmits to society values such as passion, perseverance, inclusion, and promotion of a diverse, solidary, with memory, and gender equality society.

An example of this is the Education Program of the Games whose objective is to strengthen the inclusive, diverse, and sustainable formation of teachers, girls, boys, and teenegers. In summary, this benefits 67 educational institutions located in 4 regions, specifically inside the 21 districts that will be venues.

The urban legacy

This axis contemplates the building of new sport precincts and the modernization of other spaces. This will encourage the development of our athletes and Para athletes with the objective to boost their sport talents and give them appropriate spaces where they can train according to high standards.

The Parque Deportivo Estadio Nacional will be the biggest urban and sport park of South America, with 64 hectares that will include new public courts and green spaces. The remodeling of this precinct means revealing the historic and patrimonial importance of its dependencies.

The urban legacy also considers the building of the Pan American and Parapan American Village located at the Cerrillos district. This project has two goals: firstly,to hold the 41 delegations that will visit Chile from October 20th to November 26th of 2023; secondly, this is part of a social housing project that will be at the neighbors’ disposal after the Games, so they can have a decent house.

The sport legacy

The third axis of the Legacy Program of the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games considers sports and the opportunity to encourage active and healthy lifestyles inside the community. This means being allowed to promote and normalize the practice of sports, actively contributing to improve the life of Chileans. In conclusion, the sport legacy seeks to encourage the Chilean capacity to host, organize, and produce sport mega-events in the country.

The environmental legacy

At last, trying to be part of the urgent commitment that demands the fight against climate change, Santiago 2023 promotes initiatives related to leaving an environmental legacy. In this sense, there are contemplated plans and management policies focused on reducing the environmental impact of the Games and promoting inclusion of sustainable standards in the management and report cycle of the multi-sport event.

To summarize, #Santiago2023 seeks to strengthen our capacity to organize and carry out sustainable sport mega-events in our country.

The Pan American Games will be carried out between October 20th and November 5th and the Parapan American Games will be carried out from November 17th to 26th. Both events will be held in Santiago, Chile, and will join nearly nine thousand athletes coming from 41 countries of the Americas.
