The last weekend will be recorded in national athletics history books. During 35 years, the record established by Omar Aguilar of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 19 seconds was the best time that a Chilean has achieved running 42.5 kilometers in a marathon.
However, that record has a new owner due to last Sunday, February 19th, when the athlete Carlos Díaz (29 years old) finished the Sevilla Marathon Circuit, Spain, in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 26 seconds, almost two minutes less than Aguilar’s time.
This achievement has more merit if it’s considered that throughout his career, Díaz has specialized in diverse disciplines (5,000 and 10,000 meters specifically). In this sense, his participation in Seville it’s his first experience running a marathon and as a milestone, he broke a record registered before his birth.

Carlos Díaz is now 26th in the Seville final qualification; this way, he got a longer national record list, among the followings:
500 meters indoor: 3:42:23, achieved during 2016.
3,000 meters indoor: 7:51:30, achieved during 2022.
500 meters: 3:37:82, achieved during 2016.
3,000 meters: 7:53:37, achieved during 2015.
10 kilometers in route 28:07, achieved during 2022.
21 kilometers: 1:01:32, achieved during 2020.
Moreover, it is precise to mention that he was not the only Chilean that celebrated during that historic day. Hugo Catrileo, 26 years old, also had a highlighted participation in the competition since he finished in 42nd place, achieving a record of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 17 seconds. Thus, he obtained, just as Díaz did, a better record than the historical one from Omar Aguilar.
Therefore, it is possible to state that the Seville 2023 Marathon will be remembered as the one in which two Chileans broke a national record after 35 years.
