A mural artwork by Mon Laferte and “Mono” González was inaugurated at the Parque Estadio Nacional

The artwork was created as a memorial for the 50 years since the civic-military State Coup and it is located in the eastern access of the venue.

The renowned chilean artists Mon Laferte and Alejandro “Mono” González were the authors of a mural artwork inaugurated this tuesday within the premises of the Parque Estadio Nacional, close to the eastern entrance on Pedro de Valdivia Avenue, in the remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the State Coup in 1973, in the context of the inauguration of Teatro a Mil 2023 Festival.

At the event attended the Under Secretary of Sports, Antonia Ilanes, the Under Secretary of Culture, Arts and Patrimony, Andrea Gutiérrez, the Under Secretary of Human Rights, Haydee Oberreuter, the CEO of Santiago 2023, Gianna Cunazza, the director (s) of the National Sports Institute, Israel Castro, the president of the Estadio Nacional Memoria Nacional Corporation, Marcelo Acevedo, the director of the Teatro a Mil foundation, Carmen Romero, and the Mayor of Ñuñoa, Emilia Ríos.

“This mural artwork will be a part of the stadium’s tour, where we are having a very important milestone that are the Pan American and Parapan American Games, and where sports are the protagonists, the memory should not be ostracised, on the contrary, it is an important part of the country and its present,” stated Mayor Ríos.

The Santiago 2023 CEO, Gianna Cunazza, participated in a tour through the space “Camarín de Mujeres” along several authorities.

On her part, Carmen Bravo, director of the Teatro a Mil Foundation, a project that encompasses the inauguration of this mural artwork, detailed that “in these years we have been witnesses and actors of the complex transformation process of our society. Therefore, in this 2023 version it was natural and imperative to remember the 50th anniversary of the Coup, through a program that reflects upon humanity, solidarity and reparation, along with the challenges of recovering the public spaces for the people and communities, and improving the access to culture.”

The activity started with a tour through the memorial site “Camarín de Mujeres”, where through stories and pictures, the attendees were able to know more about the history that ensued during the dictatorship at that location. Furthermore, other spaces of the Parque Estadio Nacional were also used five decades ago as detention and torture centers.
