The symbol of glory that the winners at the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games will take home will come from the heart of the Chilean land, after the signing of the alliance between the organization of this multi-sport event and the company Antofagasta Minerals.
Between both competitions, more than 5,000 physical medals will be awarded in nearly 850 individual and collective sports events. For the first time, these medals – gold, silver and bronze – will be made of copper, the most representative metal in the country and which is key to fighting climate change.
“We are very happy with this alliance. At Antofagasta Minerals we share the principles of diversity and inclusion of Pan American and Parapan American sports, as well as the sustainability behind these Games. We are committed to collaborating with the success of this multi-sport event, the largest that has been held in Chile to date. In addition to sponsoring the medals made of copper, an important part of our contribution will go to financing permanent infrastructure for sports practice in our country,” said the executive president of Antofagasta Minerals, Ivan Arriagada.
Meanwhile, the president of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic, stated that “it fills me with pride that a company with the prestige and importance of Antofagasta Minerals has been interested in being an official sponsor at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. In addition to this important agreement, the athletes who get on the podium will take home a souvenir of our land, since the medals will be made with Chilean copper from our north, which makes us very happy”.
The Commercial and Marketing Director of Santiago 2023, Juan Carlos Chamy, valued the relationship of the national industry with the Games. "Just as the medals are a symbol of the values of the Olympics, the same thing happens with the copper that represents the strength and decision of our people to open the land and move forward," he said.
This sponsorship will result in the implementation of a new track in the Estadio Nacional, where athletic competitions at the Games will be carried out.
Antofagasta Minerals is one of the top ten copper producers in the world and one of the industry leaders in innovations that contribute to more modern and sustainable mining. All of its operations receive energy from only renewable sources and two of its operations use non-desalinated seawater to produce copper.
This metal is essential for a better future since it is not only key in the generation of clean energy and electromobility, but also in the decontamination of our cities.
The mega sporting event will bring together nearly 9,000 athletes from 41 countries of the continent to compete in 39 Pan American sports and 17 Parapan American sports, with 60 and 18 disciplines, respectively.
