Cuba Closes Parapan American Judo with Two Golds from Yordani-Fernández Couple

J1/J2 female categories. Brazil dominated the specific medal count.

Monday, November 20th, 2023.- With a Cuban accent, judo concluded at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, as the island delegation triumphed in the last two finals. 

In the +90 kilograms male J1/J2 category (total blindness or severe visual impairment), the champion was Yordani Fernández, who defeated the Brazilian Wilians Silva with an ippon. 

In the same event, the first bronze medal went to the Argentinian Cristian Alderete, after defeating the Chilean Ricardo Parra. Joining them on the podium was the Brazilian Sergio Fernandes, who overcame the Mexican Óscar Aguirre. 

Additionally, the final in the +70 kilograms J1/J2 female category took place, where Yordani Fernández's wife, the Cuban Sheyla Hernández, claimed the top step of the podium after defeating the Brazilian Meg Rodrigues with an ippon. 

The bronze medals in this category went to the Brazilian Rebeca de Souza and the American Katie Davis, who won against the Venezuelan Danitza Sanabria and the Uruguayan Mariana Madeiros, respectively. 

Judo at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games came to an end, with Brazil being the most successful delegation, earning six gold medals. Cuba followed closely behind with the two victories achieved on Monday.
