Saturday, November 18th, 2023.- Canada defeated Chile 80-17 in a match valid for Group A of the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.
A large crowd gathered at Polideportivo 1 of the Estadio Nacional to support the local team, which, despite their efforts, couldn't overcome a strong North American quintet that dominated in all four quarters (19-2, 15-4, 20-5, and 26-6).
Canada's victory was based on the solid performances of Robert Hedges and Patrick Anderson, who together scored 27 points (14 and 13, respectively). It's worth noting the contribution of Nikola Goncin, who added 10 points and nine assists.
Chilean player Edgardo Romero commented on the Parapan American debut: "We gave our all to win, but they are professional players, and we are just starting. I think we are on the right path. The Canadians do this professionally, whereas nobody pays us, and we need more preparation. Now we will face Argentina, and we go with full confidence, even though they are a great team. I appreciate the people for their support and invite them to keep cheering."
This Sunday, November 19, Chile will play its second game (18:15 local time) against Argentina, which won its debut 72-44 against Venezuela.
Paralympic basketball is played with 12 players per team (five on the court and seven substitutes) and follows FIBA rules, with modifications for wheelchair use. The ball, court, and hoop are the same as Olympic basketball.
