Santiago 2023 Village is ready: The Chilean President opens the 17 towers where athletes will be staying

After a 22-month process of intense construction, this Thursday noon the Pan American and Parapan American Village was delivered in Cerrillos district.

The Santiago 2023 Village was the main protagonist of a great milestone towards the Pan American and Parapan American Games. After 21 months of work, this massive housing complex of 17 towers and 1,355 apartments was inaugurated today by the President Gabriel Boric.

“We are happy and proud to inaugurate today the Santiago 2023 Village that was built in record time. The energy of the Pan American and Parapan American Games is good for Chile, as it is a call to unity,” said the President.

The place, which will house about nine thousand athletes from 41 nations of the continent, will have many particularities: it has conventional apartments, as well as accessible and friendly ones, which translate into bathrooms and showers suitable for wheelchair mobility.

The flats also have thermopane windows and sit atop large green areas, decorated with a walkway and a sculpture of the seven-colored bird, work of the awarded National Plastic Arts 2021, Francisco Gazitúa.

Different authorities arrived at the official housing inauguration, such as Minister of Housing and Urbanism, Carlos Montes; and the Sports Minister, Jaime Pizarro, hosts of the day along with parliamentarians of many political parties.

President Boric, along with the government spokesperson Camilla Vallejo; Sports Minister, Jaime Pizarro; Cerrillos Mayor; Lorena Facuse; and Santiago 2023 Chief Executive Officer, Harold Mayne-Nicholls; made a tour of the complex where they saw two types of furnished apartments ready to welcome the athletes and Para athletes.

“The official Village delivery, on time and in the right form, is great news for Santiago 2023 because we can see how the project for the Games solidifies. We extend an invitation to all Chileans to live this moment together in the most important multisport event in the history of the country,” mentioned Mayne-Nicholls.
