Thursday, November 2nd, 2023.- Joselyn Brea from Venezuela was the winner of the 5,000 meters at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, with a time of 16'04"12.
The Caribbean athlete, who had previously won three gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in the half marathon, 1,500, and 5,000 meters, lived up to her favoritism and secured the gold medal, Venezuela's first in athletics at this edition of the continental event.
Brea, the first South American athlete to break the 15-minute barrier in the 5,000 meters and who has twice set the South American record in this event, made history once again by becoming the Pan American champion in this long-distance race.
The silver medal went to the American Taylor Werner, with a time of 16'06"48, while the bronze was awarded to the Canadian Julie-Anne Staehli, who clocked 16'06"75.
Emily Infeld from the United States, the world champion in the 10,000 meters and another top favorite, finished in fourth place with a time of 16'09"53.
