Tuesday, October 31th, 2023.- American fencers Nick Itkin and Miles Chamley, who won bronze medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, respectively, advanced undefeated to the round of sixteen in the male's individual foil fencing event at the Santiago 2023 fencing competition, held at the Centro de Deportes Paralímpicos at the Estadio Nacional.
Both North American athletes won all five of their matches in their respective groups, with Itkin in Group A and Chamley in Group B. They are now considered favorites to reach the final and compete for the gold medal. Group C was won by Brazilian fencer Guilherme Toldo, who also secured five victories.
The two Chilean fencers in the competition, Gustavo Alarcón Sirriya and Leopoldo Alarcón Román, also qualified. The former won three matches and lost two in Group C, securing a second-place finish, while Alarcón Román finished fourth in Group B with two wins and three losses.
These two local athletes, who are cousins, will face each other in the round of sixteen, guaranteeing Chile a representative in the quarterfinals.
