Thursday, october 26nd, 2023.- In stoppage time, the United States defeated Honduras 2-1 in a match valid for Group B of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, held at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar.
The Hondurans started stronger and even opened the scoring through Antony García (19'), maintaining their lead throughout the first half.
In the second half, the Americans were determined to change the course of the game and began by materializing their efforts with Daniel Leiva's goal at 72'. It seemed like the match would end in a draw, but when stoppage time was already underway, Theodore Ku-Diprieto scored the definitive 2-1 for the United States.
The goal was accompanied by controversy, as the Hondurans claimed a prior foul that the Chilean referee Manuel Vergara did not whistle. The heated protests from the Central Americans led to the ejection of the player Daniel Carter.
Both the United States and Honduras had previously lost their opening matches against Brazil and Colombia, respectively. The North Americans will play their last group stage match on Sunday (6:00 pm local time) against Colombia in Valparaíso, while Honduras will face Brazil (1:00 p.m.) in Viña del Mar to conclude the group stage.
