Sunday, Oct 22nd.- Chile continues to add medals at the Pan American Games in Santiago 2023. During Sunday morning, in the Marathon event, local athlete Hugo Catrileo secured the silver medal in the 42.195 kilometers race through the streets of the Chilean capital.
The 26-year-old athlete came in second in the race with a time of 2:12:07, only surpassed by the now two-time Pan American champion, Peruvian Cristhian Pacheco, who took the first gold for his country in this Pan American event with a time of 2:11:14. The podium was completed by another Peruvian, Luis Ostos, with a time of 2:12:34.
Catrileo led the race in the fourth stage with a time of 1:04:09. However, he faced a challenge from Pacheco in the second half of the race. Although at one point the Chilean dropped to fourth place, he managed to regain his pace and finish second to reach the podium.
This is Chile's third medal at the Pan American Games Santiago 2023, following the two silver medals won on Saturday by the Vidaurre siblings in mountain bike cross country.
At the moment, Chile ranks tenth in the Pan American medal table. The podium is led by the United States with 20 medals (nine gold), followed by Mexico in second place with 13 medals (seven gold), and Brazil in third place, also with 13 medals (four gold).
