Santiago 2023 Volunteering Program carry out a massive rally almost two months before the Games

Nearly 1,500 people gathered at the Universidad de Santiago to experience the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

A massive concentration of volunteers was held last Saturday at the central house of the Universidad de Santiago. More than a thousand collaborators arrived to participate in the closing of the activities called “The previous at your venue” (“La previa en tu sede” in Spanish), which previously was carried out in the regions of Valparaíso, O'Higgins, and Biobío.

A total of 17,000 people will participate in the Pan American and Parapan American Games, which were selected from among the 30,000 registered in a process that closed last May. Currently, the program is in an intense training stage, 10 weeks before the start of the largest sport event the country has ever organized in its history.

The Chief Executive Officer of Santiago 2023, Harold Mayne-Nicholls, valued the enthusiasm of the nearly 1,500 people who came to the educational center in Estación Central. “Volunteers are fundamental, they’re the heart and soul of the Games. Without them we would be unable to carry out this tremendous organization,” he declared.

He added that “thanks to their participation we can serve not only athletes, coaches, and the general public, but also the entire community that will be involved in the Games for a month and a half.”

The Metropolitan Governor, Claudio Orrego, also participated in the meeting at the Universidad de Santiago and referred to the preparation of the different districts to receive the Santiago 2023 Games. “Here there are no hands to spare, we have to transform Santiago into a hospitable city,” he stated.

Regarding the beautification of the capital for the multisport event, he detailed that “we finished the cleaning of 100% of the facades of the Alameda avenue, we’re currently improving sidewalks, and now comes the beautification of the city. Most importantly, many people are joining in. Today we’ve seen how groups of neighbors in different neighborhoods are beginning to paint their buildings, and I have also invited the volunteers.”

The Pan American and Parapan American Games will be held from October 20th to November 26th. The Region Metropolitana will concentrate most of the activity in 13 districts, emphasizing the venues of Parque Estadio Nacional, Parque Peñalolén and the Villa Santiago 2023 located in Cerrillos.
