Each June 5th it commemorates World Environment Day with the objective of raising awareness about taking care of our planet through daily consumption habit changes.
This month will be the 50th anniversary of the date established by the United Nations, a period in which there have been multiple activities in order to raise actions for the environment.
During our Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games, we’ll join this task committing to the planning and environmental implementation of strategies to guarantee the generation of a positive impact in the local community and the environment.

HOW THE GAMES ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY IS TRADUCED?
1. DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE SPORTING EVENTS
It includes the implementation of diverse action and initiative lines during all the Games life cycle, this considers four great cornerstones:
Sustainable design and building, where it’s approached the development of a sustainable design and building standard for the execution of sporting events. Also, it’s required that 100% of tenders and purchases have sustainability criteria and seals.
Connectivity and clean transport, we seek to promote low emission transport, fostering the use of public transport and bikes by the collaborators, and generating alliances to move forward electromobility.
Environmental management, where the concepts of environmental, integrated waste management, circular economy, implementation of hydric and energetic efficiency systems, as well as preference in the use of renewable energies are addressed.
Alliance for goals achievement, it’s expected to generate more than 20% of environmental awareness and communication campaigns, more than 18 functional areas associated with sustainable initiatives, and 80% of suppliers trained in environmental issues.
2.REPORT OF SUSTAINABLE MULTISPORT EVENTS PERFORMANCES
Visualize tangible results related to waste management and it transparently shows the environmental, social, and economic performance after the development of the Games.
Climate change management
GRI Report
With this, it’s intended to reach 26 venues with carbon footprint measurement; 100% renewable energy with I-REC Certification; +200,000 tons of Neutralised CO2e; Scope 1, 2, and 3 of carbon footprint measured for Santiago 2023, and 75% of employees use low-emission transportation.
CHILEAN FOOTPRINT
In addition, from the Santiago 2023 Corporation, we seek to generate actions to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment.
Update the Guide of Good Practice Sustainable Environmental Events (EMAS).
Boosting the Chilean Footprint Program: through the use of it in the calculation of the Santiago 2023 carbon footprint quantification, verification, and certification processes.
LEAVING AN ENVIRONMENTAL LEGACY
After the development of the Games, we want to establish a new standard for the organization of future sustainable multisport events in Chile and the American continent.
The objective is not only to carry out a sustainable and unforgettable event but also a platform to promote positive changes related to sports.
