Rugby 7: Pre-Olympics in Uruguay will be the South American prelude of Santiago 2023

The male and female competitions will provide a direct quota for the Olympic Games. Los Pumas are already runners up of the World Circuit.

An unprecedented qualifier tournament to the Olympic Games will have male Rugby 7 between June 17th and 18th at the Estadio Charrúa located in Montevideo. In this sense, it’s possible to mention that Argentina, the all-time favorite, assured its participation in Paris 2024 as runners up of the World Circuit behind New Zealand.

On the one hand, the main favorite is the host, Uruguay, who participated for the first time as a permanent team of the world championship that was finally carried out between May 20th and 21st in London. On the other hand, Chile wants to fight and be part of the five ring event, during the prelude of what will be in less than five months the Santiago Pan American Games.

Los Condores come from being invited to participate in the key dates of the World Series in Los Angeles and Vancouver and they were fifth in the South Africa Challenger. “This time we have an important competition where we have a little more time than others, we want to leave Chile in the highest place and our objective is to qualify to the Olympic Games,” assured the coach Joaquín Todeschini.

Regarding the absence of Los Pumas, the coach indicated that “it’s a unique opportunity but we are aware that Uruguay is very strong and Brazil will be an amazing team but we’ll build the puzzle to achieve the best we can, also with a lot of confidence.”

In addition to Los Cóndores, Teros, and Tupis, the tournament will have Paraguay, Colombia, and Peru. The champion will have a direct quota to Paris 2024, while the second and third place will qualify to the World Playoffs to give it all for a quota to be part of the international event.

BRAZIL IS THE FAVORITE ON THE FEMALE COMPETITION

The female competition will be played between June 15th and 17th and it also provides a direct quota and two playoff quotas for the Olympic Games. Brazil, the only South American representative in the Female World Circuit, wants to sign up for the third time after their participation in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. To achieve their goal, Brazil must win against Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Colombia, and Peru.

After the Pre-Olympic, the continental Rugby 7 in both genders will gather in Santiago 2023, with the tournament scheduled for the next November 3rd and 4th at the Municipal de La Pintana stadium, at the south of the capital.

In the male athletes category the signed-up countries are: Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, USA, Canada, Jamaica, and Mexico. The female tournament, meanwhile, will be played by the host, Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia, Canada, USA, Mexico, and Jamaica.
