Five things that are forbidden in Chile

Ahead of our Pan American and Parapan American Games, here are five main restrictions that you will find in our country.

Here's what not to do in Chile:

1.-DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL ON PUBLIC STREETS

In Chile it’s illegal to consume alcoholic beverages on the streets, walkways, roads, squares and public places in general. If you’re going to buy alcoholic beverages, do not open anything until you get home or to a private place.

“According to Article 25 of the Alcohol Law, the consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in streets, roads, squares, walkways and other places of public use. Those who violate the prohibition may be sanctioned with a warning or fine of up to 1 UTM (approximately CLP 62,000)."

2.-RESTRICTIONS ON BEACHES

In addition to the streets, it’s also forbidden to drink alcohol, smoke or leave cigarette butts and garbage in Chilean rivers, lakes and beaches. You may not smoke in enclosed places accessible to the public or for collective commercial use.

“For those who smoke in unauthorized places or throw cigarette butts in prohibited places, a fine of 1 to 4 Monthly Tax Units (UTM) is established. The penalty of rendering services for the benefit of the community consisting of cleaning beaches, lakes or rivers is also created. The penalty will be applied if the defendant agrees. If he/she opposes, a fine will be applied" (Ley Fácil, 2022).

3.-NO CAMPFIRES IN NATIONAL PARKS

We’re very proud of our national parks, whose wilderness areas are protected by law in Chile, and it’s up to us to preserve their care.

In this regard, the Ministery of Agriculture and the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf in Spanish) reported:

Use of fire in protected wildland areas:

  • Fire may not be used, except in places and conditions duly marked for this purpose.

  • Those who cause a fire risk will be sanctioned with fines, imprisonment or even expulsion from the country in the case of foreigners.

4.-IT’S BANNED TO BUY ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE

If you’re going to buy alcohol or cigarettes, it’s essential to have your identification document to ensure you’re of legal age (18 years old in Chile), otherwise, you’ll not be able to do so.

5.-DO NOT ENTER CHILE WITH PROHIBITED PRODUCTS

The Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG in Spanish) regulates the entry of goods of animal and plant origin in all customs of the country. Below we tell you what you must declare, otherwise, you could cause damage to the country's production, causing the need for an eradication or control plan.

  • Bee products: honey, wax, pollen, etc.

  • Handicrafts and decorative products with products, by-products or parts of animal and/or vegetable origin.

  • Fruits and vegetables.

  • Wild flowers and/or plants, from gardens or commercial stores. Vegetables and their parts: seeds, bulbs, rhizomes, roots, buds, tubers, cuttings, scions, etc.

  • Insects, bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms for research or other uses.

  • Meat of any animal species, vacuum-packed products, sausages, hams, etc. Dairy products and/or their derivatives.

  • Chemical and biological products for use in agricultural activities. Pharmaceutical products for veterinary use only. Products for animal feed.

  • All kinds of animals.
