During this week, many activities have taken place in the context of the Chefs de Mission Seminar, in which leaders of each of the Olympic committees participating in the Pan American and Parapan American Games gather to check the progress in terms of organization in situ, along with other initiatives.
In this scenario, between Thursday 13th and Friday 14th, April, the Santiago 2023 Medical Congress took place, in which sport health experts were able to contrast experiences, share knowledge, and visualize what the functioning of the medical areas of the event in next October will be.
Both days were attended by important referents in the area of sport health at a continental and a world level. Among them, professor Roald Bahr, Norwegian professional who’s dedicated his life to injury prevention research and Dr. Brian Mackeon, American professional who led the medical team of the NBA’s Boston Celtics for 20 years.

During these days, many leaders of medical areas of Olympic Committees in the continent conducted expositions, aside from Chilean medical doctors with vast experience in medical work with high performance athletes.
In this instance, sports-related authorities also participated, such as Dr. Alejandro Orizola, medical director of the Chilean Olympic Committee and the director of the Medical Congress, who explained the details of how the work of the medical team will be done during the Games. In this context, he said that “the medical team in charge of the Games is defined. They’re already working and their tasks are almost finished. Each delegation comes with its own medical team, which will receive logistical support and help by our team, aside from keeping the Pan American Village and the training facilities.”
Gianna Cunazza, Chief Executive Officer of Santiago 2023, was also part of the meeting, where she said that “here, we talk about a number of topics, but all with the goal of improving the physical development and high performance of the athletes. Topics such as rehabilitation, injuries, Paralympic sports will be discussed, which makes this congress very nurturing and rich.”
The presentations that took place on both days were focused on seven big study areas and discussions: Olympic committees experiences, kinesiological rehabilitation, doping, mental health, medicine and traumatology, nutrition, and Paralympic medicine.
On the other hand, Neven Ilic, the president of Panam Sports, stated that “we can expect a lot from this congress because it’ll be useful for, first, offering help to the teams of what the medical area will be in the Games, which is important and relevant, including doping. Furthermore, it’ll be useful for talking about topics of direct interest for athletes, like new technologies for the treatment of their injuries.”
