After five days of competition in the Laguna Grande of San Pedro de la Paz, the Rowing Pre Pan American, qualifier for the Pan American Games, finished with the United States leading the medal tally, followed by the home team, Chile, and the surprising Cuba.

On the last day, attended by over 100 children from local schools, the singles and doubles finals took place. Competitors from the United States, Grace Joyce and James Plihal, won the individual competition. The San Pedro-born Antonia Abraham finished second in the female competition.

The final regattas were double short sculls and it was in the female event where the general champion of the competition was decided. The United States, with Veronica Nicacio and Madelina Focht, obtained the gold that allowed the North American country to surpass Chile in the final tally.

Finally, the Cuban pair, Carlos Ajete y Reidy Cardona, obtained a hard-earned victory in male doubles. This victory allowed the islanders to be present at the podium, beating other traditionally successful teams such as Uruguay and Canada.

TEAM CHILE: “THIS GIVES US FULL MOTIVATION FOR SANTIAGO 2023”

The national athlete Melita Abraham, who began her career in the Regatas Miramar of San Pedro de la Paz, highlighted the preparation ahead of Santiago 2023 and said: “We’re super happy to be able to live this event in Chile, in this lagoon that’s been ten out of ten. It’s a course with an international level and being able to give it all and becoming one of the strongest teams in the continent has been a great plus. This will give us all the motivation we need to keep on strong ahead of Santiago 2023.”

Meanwhile, the Puerto Montt-born Victoria Hostetter, from the Viento y Marea club from that city, highlighted the best of the venue district towards foreign delegations and said “Everything was great in San Pedro de la Paz. I talked to some girls from the United States and they’re really happy with the organization, they also said the place is beautiful, the course is perfect, and that they’re happy with the installations.”

PRESIDENT OF THE CHILEAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE: “THIS COURSE IS A DREAM AND WILL BE THE GREAT LEGACY OF SANTIAGO 2023”

In the closure of the Rowing Pre Pan American, the president of the Chilean Olympic Committee and vice president of the Santiago 2023 Corporation, Miguel Ángel Mujica, also highlighted the installations of the most austral venue of the Pan American Games and said “This course is a dream and it’ll be the great legacy that Santiago 2023 will leave for Chilean Rowing.”

“This is a dream that was difficult to understand when we’re in Carauma without water and then we thought about San Pedro de la Paz, so far away from Santiago, and maybe not following the norms of Panam Sports. But we’re 45 minutes away by plane and with various flights daily and it hasn’t been a problem,” he added.

Team Chile achieved the classification of all boats in the six participating categories, both for male and female, which means they’ll have the chance of fighting for up to thirteen medals in the Pan American Games, where the mixed eight events will make their debut. Rowing regattas will take place from October 21st to the 25th in the same venue that was shown to the world these days.
