BMX Racing

Cycling It is a cycling discipline that is practiced with cross bicycles, with 20-inch wheels.

Competitors need different types of protective gear, such as a face-covering helmet, gloves, goggles and a suit with long protective sleeves. BMX Racing is essentially an extreme and contact sport, where spectators can see how competitors bump into each other in the chaos of the race, but it may result in a penalty or disqualification if the competitor impedes the overtaking of another competitor intentionally. In Santiago 2023, BMX Racing will add points to the Olympic ranking towards Paris 2024.

History of this sport

BMX cycling - acronym for Bicycle MotoCross - was born in California, United States in the '70s, after young people wanted to imitate their MotoCross idols on the same tracks, but with the help of a bicycle. Later, the BMX tracks were adapted so that the wide wheels would not get stuck in the wet loose dirt, so today, the track is made with compact loamy sand.

After the BMX Federation was born in 1981, the following year the first World Championship took place; before the BMX was fully integrated into the International Cycling Union (UCI), in 1993.

In Chile, the first race was held in the Araucano Park in 1979, a few years later the Chilean cycling federation (FCBX) was formed, which brought together the athletes of this specialty until approximately 2012. Since then they have been under the shelter of the cycling federation.

BMX Racing has been considered an Olympic sport since the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and in the Pan American Games it has been part of the calendar since 2007, always giving a great show full of speed and adrenaline.
