Sunday, November 26th, 2023.- We are sad; the Parapan American Games have come to an end, and Santiago 2023 bids farewell, passing the torch to Barranquilla, which will host the multisport event in the Caribbean Colombian city in 2027.
The Parapan American Games held in Chile featured a recurring champion, as Brazil dominated the event from day one. Brazil's triumph is not surprising, as the government of that country invests heavily in its Paralympic athletes, and they have won every Parapan American Games since Rio de Janeiro 2007, making them five-time champions.
At Santiago 2023, they simply dominated, finishing at the top of the medal table with a total of 343 medals, including 156 golds, 98 silvers, and 89 bronzes.
Brazil's most successful sport was Para swimming, with 120 medals in total, including 67 golds, 30 silvers, and 23 bronzes. Douglas Rocha shone the brightest in the aquatic center, securing nine first-place finishes.
In Para athletics, the South American giant also stood out, claiming 83 medals, including 34 golds, 27 silvers, and 22 bronzes.
In second place in the medal standings was the United States, with 55 golds, 58 silvers, and 53 bronzes, while Colombia finished third with 50 golds, 58 silvers, and 53 bronzes.
