Gustavo Fernández Lives Up to Expectations, Clinches Gold in Tennis

The Argentinian secured a double victory in wheelchair tennis at Santiago 2023, defeating Chile's Alexander Cataldo in the singles final.

Saturday, November 25th, 2023.- One of the world's top stars who made an appearance at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games was the Argentinian Gustavo Fernández, the undisputed master of wheelchair tennis at the continental level.

The native of Río Tercero came to Chile to win the two gold medals offered in the Open category, and he achieved just that. On Friday, he celebrated victory in the doubles (alongside Ezequiel Casco), and today he triumphed in the singles.

Ranked 3rd in the world, Fernández faced local player Alexander Cataldo (13th in the world), who displayed determination and, with the support of the crowd, tried to challenge the favorite. However, Fernández ultimately prevailed with a solid score of 6-2 and 6-0.

The Argentinian has had an illustrious career, boasting titles from prestigious tournaments such as Roland Garros (2016 and 2019), the Australian Open (2017 and 2019), and Wimbledon (2019). Additionally, he now has seven gold medals at the Parapan American level, including the two won at Santiago 2023.

Gustavo Fernández's victory allowed Argentina to add its 23rd gold medal, solidifying its position in fifth place on the medal tally. Meanwhile, Alexander Cataldo's silver is the 20th for Team ParaChile in that category.
