Guillermo Varona Sets New Parapan American Record in Javelin F46

The Cuban Para athlete surpassed his own record set previously in Lima 2019 at Santiago 2023.

Friday, November 24th, 2023.- In the penultimate day of Para athletics at Santiago 2023, held at the Centro Atlético Mario Recordón of the Estadio Nacional, Guillermo Varona secured the gold medal and a new Parapan American record in the male's javelin throw, F46 class.

The victor sent the implement to 60.23 meters on his fifth throw.

Varona, born in Camagüey, a city located in central-eastern Cuba, finished sixth in the recent World Championships at Paris. Additionally, at the Parapan American Games in Lima 2019, he won gold and finished fifth in the shot put.

The silver medal went to his compatriot Eliezer Gabriel, with a throw of 57.88, while the podium was completed by the Argentine Matías Leonel Puebla, with 48.97.

The F46 class includes field athletes with moderately limited movement in one or both arms, or the absence of limbs. Therefore, they must transfer power from the hips and legs to the throw.
