Brazil Keeps Winning Medals in Para Swimming

Mariana Gesteira and Vanilton do Nascimento secured two more gold medals for the South American powerhouse at Santiago 2023.

Friday, November 24th, 2023.- Brazil has dominated Para swimming from start to finish at the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago, and on Friday, they added two more golds to their extensive collection.

In the female's 100m freestyle S9 category (swimmers with slightly limited coordination in the arms and legs, significant limitation in one leg, or limb absence), Brazilian Mariana Gesteira set a Parapan American record with her time of 1:02.26 minutes. Second place went to the American Natalie Sims (1:05.32), and third to Brazil's Cecilia Jerónimo (1:08.33).

Next up was the male's 50m butterfly S6 category (swimmers with moderately limited coordination on one side of the body, very limited coordination in the lower torso and legs, and for swimmers of short stature, or limb absence). Colombian Nelson Crispín, the favorite, won with a time of 31.33 seconds. The silver medal went to Mexico's Jesús Gutiérrez, and the bronze to the United States' Zachary Shattuck (33.67).

Finally, in the male's 50m freestyle S9 category (swimmers with slightly limited coordination in the arms and legs, significant limitation in one leg, or limb absence), Brazilian Vanilton do Nascimento secured the top spot with a time of 26.76 seconds. The silver medal also went to a Brazilian, Anrey Ribeiro (27.32), and the bronze to the American Noah Busch (27.34).
