Brazil Dominates in Battle for Bronze in Para Taekwondo

Out of six matches for the third place, three were won by Brazilian athletes. Mexico secured two victories, and the remaining one went to Cuba.

Friday, November 24th, 2023.- Much like in practically all sports at Santiago 2023, Brazil is also dominating in Para Taekwondo. This was confirmed this afternoon during the medal award ceremony with the bronze matches in six categories, and three of them were won by Brazilian athletes.

In the female's 57-kilogram category, Larissa Lopes defeated her compatriot Elisangela Matias 11-5. In the 65-kilogram category, Leylianne Ramos won in the tiebreaker by penalties against Colombian Yerly Martínez after a 14-14 tie. And in the male's 70-kilogram category, Carlos Coelho overcame Colombian Cristián Peña 31-29.

"I have no words to describe how happy I am. I have worked so hard for this; I thank everyone who has supported me, and I dedicate it to my country," said Larissa Lopes, very emotional with her bronze.

Mexico secured two bronzes thanks to Ehecatl Cano, who defeated Puerto Rican Oscar Fontan 22-20 in the male's 70-kilogram category, and Jair Liborio, who won 19-16 against his compatriot Víctor Palacios in the male's 63-kilogram category.

"I'm happy to have raised Mexico's name. This victory is for my family there and for my entire country," said Liborio.

In the last battle for the third position, Cuban Marco Mayor prevailed 7-4 over Argentine Facundo Novik in the men's 63-kilogram category.

Following the bronze matches, the finals were about to begin.
