Yankiel Sol Achieves Second World Record at the Parapan American Games

The islander Para-athlete made a jump of 7.74 meters at Santiago 2023, surpassing the mark of 7.71 meters that he had set a few months ago in Bogotá.

Thursday, November 23rd, 2023.- On Thursday afternoon, Cuban athlete Robiel Yankel Sol broke his own world record in the male's T47 long jump (physical disability in upper limbs), achieving a new mark of 7.74 meters at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. 

Despite sustaining an injury in his last attempt at theCentro Atlético Mario Recordón, the Para-athlete triumphed in the event, securing the gold medal, and surpassing his previous best set in Bogotá 2023. 

In the process, he claimed the continental record, previously held by American Roderick Townsend at the 2015 Toronto Games (7.18). 

Yankiel Sol is also the current holder of the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. 

The silver medal went to Argentine athlete Alberto Nicolás Piriz, with a mark of 6.91 in his final jump, just one centimeter ahead of Colombian José Messu (6.90). 

The T47 long jump world record is the second to be achieved at the current Parapan American Games, following Brazilian Elizabeth Rodrigues breaking the planetary record in the F51 discus throw with a distance of 17.80 meters.
