The Gold Medal With a Special Dedication by Rayane Soares

The Brazilian won the 100 meters T13 at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, a victory she dedicated to a friend who recently passed away.

Thursday, November 23rd, 2023.- The female's 100 meters T13 (visually impaired) kicked off the third day of Para athletics at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games after technical issues on Wednesday forced their rescheduling.

As a result, Brazilian Rayane Soares had to wait 24 hours to secure the gold medal in the 100 meters, which she won with almost a one-second lead over Argentinian Blanca Cerrudo.

The winner, who came to the Centro Atlético Mario Recordón after securing third place in the 400 meters at the last Paris World Championships, clocked 12.19 seconds, while her rival finished in 13.11 seconds, earning the silver medal, an improvement from the bronze she obtained in Lima 2019.

The third-place position on the podium went to Venezuelan Greilyz Villarroel (13.15 seconds).

The native of Caxias, who finished second in this event four years ago, stated that this victory held a special dedication: “I am very happy with my medal, my first gold of the year. This is for a great friend who passed away. Being here, on the podium, singing the national anthem, is a tribute to her.”

Costa Rican Melissa Calvo finished in fourth place with a time of 13.55 seconds, while Mexican Priscila Chávez came in fifth with 13.89 seconds.
