Mexico Takes 1st and 2nd Places in 200m Freestyle S3, Bronze for Chile

Mexican Diego López Díaz defended his Parapan American title and set a new record for the distance, followed by his compatriot Marco Zárate, at Santiago 2023. Chilean Patricio Larenas claimed the bronze.

Thursday, November 23rd, 2023.- Mexican swimming dominated in the 200m Freestyle S3, securing gold and silver at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. Diego López Díaz and Marcos Zárate claimed the 1-2 positions in the event where Chilean Patricio Larenas secured the bronze.

López Díaz defended the title he won at Lima 2019 and set a new regional record, clocking in at 3:39.66, with a considerable lead of almost 19 seconds over his compatriot in second place. Larenas, on the other hand, finished the race with a time of 4:19.48.

This achievement solidifies the Mexican delegation's position in fourth place in the medal tally, with 19 gold medals and a total of 82 overall. The Mexican swimmers have shone in the pool at the Centro Acuático at the Estadio Nacional, boasting a record of ten golds, 20 silvers, and 19 bronzes.

Meanwhile, Chile added to its aquatic achievements on the day, securing its first gold with Vicente Almonacid. Larenas claimed a third bronze, in addition to Alberto Abarza's four silvers.
