Parapan American Records Dominate the 100m and 400m T38

American Ryan Medrano and Colombian Karen Palomeque won the gold medal at Santiago 2023 with new records for the continental event. The final of the female’s 100 meters T13 was rescheduled.

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2023.- In two of the three sprint events that closed the second day of Para athletics at Santiago 2023, there were new Parapan American records, providing a fantastic finale to this Wednesday. 

In the male's T38 (cerebral palsy) 100 meters, the American Ryan Medrano won with a time of 11.20 seconds, taking over the record that belonged to Brazilian Edson Cavalcante Pinheiro since Lima 2019. 

"I feel fantastic. I have more energy after the race. I set a new record. Now, I'm going for Jaydin (Blackwell, the American record)," he said, very excited. 

The silver medal went to Colombian Santiago Solís (11.36 seconds), while the bronze was claimed by Mexican José Chessani (11.56 seconds). Chile's David Jorquera finished fourth (12.49 seconds). 

In the female's T38 (cerebral palsy) 400 meters, Colombian Karen Palomeque set a new Parapan American record with a time of 1:01.32. She surpassed her compatriot Katty Hurtado (1:02.97) and Argentina's Milagros del Valle González (1:07.48). 

"I was very consistent. I'm happy because, in addition to the victory, I set a record. I was working for that, but it still surprises you when it happens," said the winner. 

The female's T13 (visual impairment) 100 meters final has been rescheduled for Thursday at 2:53 p.m.
