Canada Defeats Mexico: Will Play Semifinals Against Brazil in Female's Goalball

The Olympic team defeated the Aztecs swiftly and secured their spot in the round of the final four, where they hope to surprise the favorites to surpass the third place finishes from the last two Parapan American Games.

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2023.- Canada's national team will have a new opportunity to vie for the gold medal in Parapan American goalball after advancing to the semifinals at Santiago 2023, following a commanding 10-0 victory over Mexico. The match concluded the morning session on Wednesday and took place at the Paralympic Sports Center within the National Stadium.

The two-time Paralympic champions managed the game time for their top scorer, Emma Reinke, who only scored three goals, while Amy Burk contributed five goals to secure the early victory.

In this manner, Canada will face Brazil on Thursday for a spot in the Parapan American final. It's worth noting that the North American team has secured the bronze medal in all three editions of this sport in the continental event. They have lost two semifinals against Brazil (2011 and 2019) and one against the United States (2015).

"Brazil and us are rivals; we face each other all the time, and it will be a great match. Both countries are strong in this sport, and it all comes down to who will make the first mistake. We like playing against them, and we're sure they like playing against us," reflected Amy Burk.

Regardless of the outcomes, the Canadian's assessment of the Games is highly positive: "Goalball is growing a lot in the Americas, and that's the competitiveness we like to see in our sport, not only in the Americas but worldwide."
