Para Swimming: The Brazilian Laila Suzigan Secures Her Fourth Gold

In the female's SB5 100-meter breaststroke event, Suzigan also set a new Parapan American record. In the same male's event, Roberto Alcalde, also from Brazil, emerged victorious, contributing to Brazil's tally of 36 golds in this sport.

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2023.- Brazilian swimmer Laila Suzigan continues to shine in the Para swimming event at Santiago 2023, securing her fourth gold medal today along with a new Pan American record. 

Suzigan triumphed in the female's SB5 100-meter breaststroke, adding this victory to her previous wins in the 400m freestyle S6, the 4x50 mixed 20 points relay, and the 4x50 mixed freestyle 20 points relay. 

In today's competition, she clocked a time of 1:57.01, breaking the continental record previously held by her compatriot Paloma Sampaio since Toronto 2015. The silver went to another Brazilian, Esthefany de Oliveira (2:06.07), and the bronze to Mexican Vlanney Trejo (2:06.59). 

In the second event of the morning, Brazil reached 36 golds in the Para swimming medal tally as Roberto Alcalde claimed victory in the male's SB5 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:37.11. Second place went to Argentinian Germán Arévalo (1:39.82), and third to Colombian Julián Triana (1:45.11).
