Day Summary: Para Athletics starts With World Record

Elizabeth Rodrigues, from Brazil, won gold and set a new world record in the F5 discus at the start of the largest sport in the Paralympic movement.

Tuesday, November 21st, 2023.- The sixth day of competitions in Santiago 2023 was marked by the start of athletics, which left for the record five Parapan American records and a world record.

The excitement of the greatest sport of the Paralympic movement took place at the Centro atlético Mario Recordón, where a large number of people came to enjoy many finals, both in track and field.

The great result of the day was the new world record set by Brazilian Elisabeth Rodrigues in the discus throw class F5. The Olympic and world champion beat her only rival, Mexico's Leticia Ochoa, with a throw of 17.80 meters to win her third Parapan American crown.

Also noteworthy were the nine Parapan American records broken during the day. In addition to the record in the discus F5, new records were set in the discus throw F11 (Isabela Silva of Brazil with 38.23); in the shot put F20 (Poleth Méndez of Ecuador with 13.91); in the 5,000 meters T11 (Yeltsin Ortega of Brazil with 15'13"10); in the long jump T47 (Kiara Rodríguez of Ecuador with 5. 94); discus F37 (Edwars Varela of Venezuela with 52.68); 400 meters T38 (Ryan Medrano of the United States with 51"14); javelin F13 (Ulicer Aguilera of Cuba with 61.11); shot put F35/36/37 (Yomaira Cohen of Venezuela with 10.39).

The countries that won the most gold medals on the first day of athletics were the United States, Brazil and Ecuador, all with four medals. Cuba won three, Venezuela two, while Colombia, Mexico and Argentina celebrated one gold medal.
