Para Swimming: Gold and Parapan American Record for Colombia and Mexico

Colombian Carlos Serrano won the male's S8 100m freestyle, while Mexican Ángel Camacho triumphed in the male's S4 50m backstroke, both setting new continental records. Brazilian Maria Gomes clinched victory in the women's SB12 100m breaststroke.

Tuesday, November 21st, 2023.- Carlos Serrano secured Colombia's eleventh gold medal in Para Swimming at Santiago 2023 by winning the male's S8 100m freestyle with a new Parpan American record. 

At the pool of the Centro Acuático at the Estadio Nacional, Serrano set a mark of 1:00.97, surpassing the continental record set by Mexican Luis Andrade (1:01.23) at Lima 2019. The silver medal went to Brazilian Gabriel Silva (1:01.30), while the bronze was claimed by the previous record holder, Mexican Andrade (1:01.56). 

In the male's S4 50m backstroke, Mexico dominated the podium entirely. Gold was earned by Ángel Camacho in 42.80, surpassing the Parapan American record held by his compatriot Juan Reyes since Toronto 2015 (44.76). Second place went to Jesús Hernández with 46.55, and third was Gustavo Sánchez with 49.55. 

Another final this afternoon was the female's SB12 100m breaststroke, where gold went to Brazilian Maria Gomes, clocking in at 1:17.69. Silver was earned by Venezuelan Belkis Mota (1:29.80), and bronze went to Argentine Nadia Báez (1:29.88).
