Wheelchair Tennis: Chilean Cabrillana Comes Very Close to Medals

The local player advanced to the semifinals by defeating the American Maylee Phelps 6-3 and 6-3. Her opponent for a spot in the final will be the Colombian Angélica Bernal, ranked 10th in the world.

Tuesday, November 21st, 2023.- Chilean Macarena Cabrillana (ranked 20th in the world) advanced to the semifinals of the wheelchair tennis competition and is one win away from securing a medal at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.

At the Centro Deportivo de Tennis of Etadio Nacional, Cabrillana defeated the American Maylee Phelps 6-3 and 6-3 in 90 minutes of play. The match was tougher than the score indicates, with the effectiveness of the first serve proving crucial for the local player's victory.

In the semifinals, the Chilean will face a tough challenge against the Colombian Angélica Bernal, ranked 10th in the world, who on Tuesday defeated the Canadian Natalia Lanucha 6-0 and 6-2. The winner will have secured either gold or silver, while the loser will have the opportunity to compete for the bronze.

Cabrillana is one of the three Chileans still in contention in various individual categories. In the men's division, Alexander Cataldo is in the quarterfinals, and in the quad mixed category, Francisco Cayulef has advanced to the semifinals.
