Para Table Tennis, Para Powerlifting Fill Chile with Gold

These two sports delivered five new gold medals to Team ParaChile, surpassing Argentina in the medal count at Santiago 2023 and matching their performance in Lima.

Monday, November 20th, 2023.- After a Sunday with not many celebrations (just a bronze in cycling), Monday's session at Santiago 2023 was filled with gold for Chile, securing five gold medals and matching their performance from the previous Parapan American Games in Lima 2019.

The celebrations kicked off in Para powerlifting with Camila Campos winning gold in the -50, -55 kg category. She lifted 121 kg, setting a new Parapan American record and securing the gold medal for Chile.

Shortly afterward, the cheers and festivities moved to the Olympic Training Center, where the table tennis duo of Florencia Pérez and Ignacio Torres clinched Chile's seventh gold by defeating the Brazilian pair of Israel Pereira and Jennyfer Marques 3-0.

Back in Para powerlifting, Jorge Carinao, who included a marriage proposal after his victory, secured Chile's eighth gold by lifting 190 kg in the -65 kg category, setting a new Parapan American record.

For the last two gold medals of the day, attention returned to Para table tennis, where Maximiliano Rodríguez and Cristian González defeated the Brazilian duo of Lucas Arabian and Fabio Silva 3-0 in the men's doubles MD8. The pair of Ignacio Torres and Matías Pino then won 3-1 against the Brazilian team of Israel Pereira and Paulo Salmin in the men's doubles MD14.

With these five new gold medals, Team Chile surpassed Argentina in the medal standings, climbing to the fourth position with a total of 10 medals compared to the nine of the Argentine delegation.
