Wheelchair Tennis: Chilean Duo Advances to Semifinals

The duo of Macarena Cabrillana and Sofía Fuentes defeated the Costa Rican team to advance to the final four rounds at Santiago 2023.

Monday, November 20th, 2023.- The Chilean pair composed of Macarena Cabrillana and Sofía Fuentes defeated the Costa Rican team of Adriana Quesada and Valeria Valverde with a double 6-0, securing their place in the semifinals of wheelchair tennis at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. 

As the score reflects, it was a comfortable match for the local duo, who will face the Americans Maylee Phelps and Dana Mathewson next Wednesday. 

The opponents of the hosts surpassed the Canadian pair of Anne-Marie Dolinar and Natalia Lanucha on Tuesday with a score of 6-0, 6-2. 

Meanwhile, the Brazilian team of Maria Fernanda Alvez and Meirycoll Duval defeated the Ecuadorian pair of Alexandra Meza and Carolina Lasso with a double 6-0. 

In the final four rounds, they will face the Colombian duo of Johanna Martínez and Angélica Bernal, who received a bye in the first round. 

In male's doubles, the Ecuadorians Francisco Beltrán and Eduardo López Manzano won 6-0, 6-3 against the Canadians Barry Henderson and Thomas Venos. 

Para tennis players use specially designed wheelchairs for this sport. The competition includes singles and doubles in two sport classes: Open, corresponding to athletes with physical disabilities affecting the lower limbs who meet the sport's eligibility criteria, and Quad, involving athletes with a disability affecting the hand that grips the racket, as well as the lower limbs.
