Monday, November 20th, 2023.- Puerto Rico's hopes of trying to keep a close match against the United States quickly dissipated on the court of Polideportivo 1 at the Estadio Nacional, as the Americans started with a 21-point lead that they only extended further to win 81-44.
The champion at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games dominated without opposition from the beginning, although when they felt the victory was secure, they eased off a bit, allowing the Puerto Ricans to somewhat level the course of the game.
In fact, the last quarter was won by the Americans 17-16.
Jorge Salazar and Jacob Williams were the top scorers for the winning team, both with 16 points, while among the defeated, Carlos Martínez stood out with the same number of points.
With this victory, the reigning champions lead Group B at Santiago 2023 with two wins in as many games, following their 82-42 victory over Brazil in the opening match.
"We take one game at a time. Now, we will watch the video of the game to make the necessary improvements. We have to come out stronger on defense for the next game," said Peter Berry, who scored four points.
Puerto Rican player Mitchell Braithwaite acknowledged, "We played a good game; they are very tough to beat. We learned a bit and generated chemistry among ourselves, so against Brazil, we'll know better what to do. I think we did well against a very good team, despite not having so many strong players, so I'm proud of my teammates. We will move forward, and hopefully, we can secure the bronze medal."
Earlier, Colombia defeated Brazil 66-56, and this Tuesday, at 6:15 p.m. local time, they will define the leadership of the group against the United States.
Meanwhile, Brazil and Puerto Rico will compete in a match to avoid remaining winless.
The results in this initial phase of male's wheelchair basketball determine the matchups for the quarter-finals, as all eight participants advance to the final stage.
The male's category grants the champion a direct spot at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, while the silver and bronze ensure participation in the repechage.
