Wheelchair Tennis: Solid Debut for Argentinian Gustavo Fernández

The world number three and a significant favorite to win the gold medal in the male's competition defeated Chilean Brayan Tapia 6-1 and 6-2. His quarter-final opponent will be Costa Rican José Pablo Gil.

Monday, November 20th, 2023.- Undoubtedly one of the standout figures in the Parapan American Games is Argentinian Gustavo Fernández, ranked third in the world and winner of eight Grand Slam titles (five in singles and three in doubles) in wheelchair tennis. At Santiago 2023, he is a major contender for the gold medal in the male's competition, and in his debut, he demonstrated his prowess.

On the Central Court of the Centro Deportivo del Tenis at the Estadio Nacional, Gusti defeated Chilean Bryan 6-1 and 6-2 in just 49 minutes of play. Despite the local player's decent performance, he could do little against the skill of the Argentinian.

In the quarter-finals, Fernández will face Costa Rican José Pablo Gil, who defeated Ecuadorian Eduardo López 6-4 and 6-0.

The second seed in the male's tournament is Chilean Alexander Cataldo, ranked 13th in the world, who will debut against Colombian Manuel Sánchez.
