Monday, November 20th, 2023.- Canada swiftly recovered from their initial defeat against the United States, securing a commanding 11-1 victory against Peru in the second round of the female's goalball at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. With seven goals from Emma Reinke, the Canadian team left no chances for the South American side, setting up a defining match against Chile for their place in the final phase.
The Canadians, who finished eighth in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games, saw St. Thomas' native as the star of the triumph, scoring seven times, backed by Amy Burk (4). The Peruvian team only managed to get on the scoreboard through Milagros Cotrina in the match held at the Centro de Deportes Olímpicos at the Estadio Nacional.
Meghan Mahon provided a positive assessment of the North American team. "It was a great game for the team; we could focus on defense and how to keep calm in every phase of the game. We'll take advantage of what we learned today, both the positive aspects and areas we can improve on, to come even stronger in the next match," she reflected.
Today's Group D schedule will conclude with the clash between the United States and Chile, while tomorrow will see the hosts facing Canada and the Americans against Peru, determining the quarterfinal lineup in the discipline for visually impaired individuals.
