Evelyn Vieira De Oliveira, the Brazilian Contender for Boccia Gold

The boccia player secured a comfortable 8-1 victory against María Cecilia Pancca from Peru in the BC3 category, establishing herself as one of the top contenders.

Domingo 19 de noviembre, 2023.- A commanding triumph by Brazilian Evelyn Vieira de Oliveira over Peruvian María Cecilia Pancca, with a score of 8-1, stood out in the BC3 class matches of boccia at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.

"It was a good match. There's always more anxiety, anticipation in the first one. I prepared well to live this moment. I'm happy to be here, in this important competition that allows me to gain experience in my career," Vieira commented, who, in 2016, secured a gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2016 Summer Paralympics (Rio de Janeiro) and is considered one of the strong contenders at Santiago 2023.

Reflecting on her match against the Peruvian Pancca, Evelyn Vieira De Oliveira remarked: "I had played with Cecilia in Brazil, at the Copa America. This was my second experience with her in championships, and I think I played well. Things went as I expected, but there's still much room for improvement. We need to take it step by step, first qualify and then wait for the opponent in the semifinals."

Athletes in the BC3 class have significant limitations in arm and leg function and minimal or no control of their trunk. They cannot grasp or release the ball firmly and cannot consistently propel the ball within the field of play. They are allowed to use a ramp with the assistance of a sports assistant.

In the same category, Chilean Javiera Quintriqueo won 4-3 against María del Mar Vélez from Colombia, while Canadian Joëlle Guérette did the same (6-2) against Natalie Chastain from the United States. Brazilian Evani Soárez defeated Eimy Losley from Guatemala 12-0, and finally, Argentinian Steffania Ferrando secured a 16-0 win against Lucía Barboza from Uruguay.
