Canada Secures Quarterfinal Spot in Wheelchair Basketball

Following their 82-42 victory over Venezuela in the Group A match at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, the male's team secured their place in the top four.

Sunday, November 19th, 2023.- The Canadian wheelchair basketball team clinched their second consecutive win by defeating Venezuela 82-42 in a match held at Polideportivo 1 of the Estadio Nacional in Group A of the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. 

In Saturday's games, the North Americans had a resounding victory over Chile (80-17), and on Sunday, in their second match, they reaffirmed their favoritism by comfortably beating Venezuela 82-42. 

From the first quarter, the Canadian team established dominance by winning 24-6, a lead they maintained in the subsequent periods despite a slight improvement shown by the Caribbean team in the second (40-18) and third quarters (55-28). 

Similar to the game against the local team, one of the standout players for the North American team was Nikola Goncin, contributing with 17 points and six assists. 

The performance of his teammate Colin Higgins also stood out with 17 goals, while Patrick Anderson was the third highest scorer with 12. 

With this victory, the Canadians secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the competition, scheduled to commence on Wednesday. 

Paralympic basketball follows FIBA rules, with modifications due to the use of wheelchairs. The ball, court, and hoop are the same as in Olympic basketball.
