Wheelchair Tennis: Chilean Sofía Fuentes Eliminated in Debut

In the closest match of the opening day, the local player fell to Ecuadorian Alexandra Meza, 6-4 and 7-5, in the female's singles round of 16.

Sunday, November 19th, 2023.- In the most thrilling match of the opening day of wheelchair tennis, Chilean Sofía Fuentes was eliminated in the debut of the female's singles draw, losing 6-4 and 7-5 to Ecuadorian Alexandra Meza. 

The match took place on the Court Central del Centro Deportivo del Tenis at Estadio Nacional, filled with fans cheering on the local athlete. However, despite her effort and being close to winning the second set, Fuentes ended up losing in nearly two hours of play. 

Now, the Ecuadorian will face a very challenging quarterfinal, meeting the tournament's top favorite, seventh-ranked Diana Mathewson from the United States. 

In other female's singles round of 16 matches, Argentine María Florencia Moreno defeated Costa Rican Adriana Quesada 6-0, 6-0, and Colombian Johana Martínez beat Canadian Anne Marie Dolinar 6-0, 6-3. 

In the male's singles round of 32, Colombian Manuel Sánchez defeated Ecuadorian Francisco Beltrán 6-1, 6-1, and Uruguayan Luciano Varela defeated Venezuelan Orlando Bello 6-0, 6-0.
