Juan Carlos Garrido Secures Fifth Gold for Chile

The Para powerlifting representative added a gold medal for Team ParaChile with a great performance in the 72-kilogram category, lifting a weight of 197 kilograms.

Saturday, November 18th, 2023.- After a spectacular performance at the Gimnasio Chimkowe in Peñalolén, weightlifter Juan Carlos Garrido rightfully claimed the fifth gold medal for Team ParaChile.

In the 72-kilogram category of Para powerlifting, the national representative managed to lift 197 kilograms (193, 195, and 197).

With this achievement, Garrido surpassed the Pan American record held by Colombian Jaine Castillo at 190 kilograms.

Para powerlifting made its debut at the Rio 2007 Parapan American Games. This Para sport involves lying on a bench and maneuvering a chest press. It is open to Para athletes with physical disabilities: male and female of short stature, amputations, or limited leg strength or flexibility, competing based on weight.
