Para Powerlifting: Brazilian Lucas Galvao dos Santos Wins the First Gold

The Gimnasio Chimkowe in Peñalolén is the venue for this Paralympic discipline, which had its first day of competition this Saturday.

Saturday, November 18th, 2023.- The first gold medal in Para powerlifting went to Brazil this Saturday. At the Gimnasio Chimkowe in Peñalolén, athlete Lucas Galvao dos Santos was the one to secure the first gold medal of the Parapan American Games in his discipline. 

He achieved this in the -49-kilogram category, with a result of 150 and a progressive performance of 142, 146, and 150 in the three allowed rounds. 

The second place, and consequently the silver medal, went to Cuban Enmanuel González Rodríguez, with a total of 149 (146, 149, and null). The bronze medal went to Colombian Jhonny Morales, with a total of 148 (143, 148, and null). 

It is worth noting that Para powerlifting is open to athletes with one or more of the eight possible disabilities: muscle strength impairment, range of motion impairment, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, or athetosis. 

During the competition, athletes lie on their backs on a specially designed bench. After gripping or receiving the bar with extended arms, the lifter awaits the referee's signal with elbows closed and the bar under control before proceeding with the lift. 

Throughout Saturday, there will be five more determinations: Female -61 kilograms; Female -73 kilograms, -79 kilograms; Male -59 kilograms; Female -41 kilograms, and Male -72 kilograms.
