Karate: Thomas Scott Responds to Favoritism and Wins Gold for the United States

The American athlete triumphed in the final with a score of 3-2 against Mexican Carlos Villarreal in the male's -75 kg category.

Sunday, November 5th, 2023.- The United States continues to dominate in winning gold medals at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, securing their third medal in karate thanks to Thomas Scott's victory in the male's -75 kg kumite category.

The American athlete defeated Mexican Carlos Villarreal 3-2 at the Centro de Deportes de Contacto, living up to his status as the favorite, entering Santiago 2023 as number 7 in the world in his category.

Delighted with the victory, Scott declared with the gold around his neck, "I promised myself I would try to stay calm if I won, but I couldn't resist. I'm overwhelmed with emotions."

"These are my fourth Pan American Games, and I'm proud of my team, of our effort. We fought very hard for this. I really am overwhelmed with emotion," concluded the American.

With this gold medal, the United States reached 123 gold medals at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, making them by far the leader in the medal count. Brazil, their closest pursuer, currently has 65 gold medals.
