Venezuela Adds Another Gold in Karate Thanks to Andrés Madera

The Venezuelan athlete defeated the Chilean Tomás Freire in the final of the male's -67kg category, securing the second gold medal for his country in this discipline at Santiago 2023.

Sunday, November 5th, 2023.- Venezuela secured another gold medal in the final hours of Santiago 2023, with Andrés Madera winning the male's -67kg karate kumite final against Chile's Tomás Freire at the Centro de Deportes de Contacto at the Estadio Nacional.

Although the final result of the match ended in a 3-3 tie, the gold medal went to Madera as he scored the first point in the duel, securing the victory by senshu. All of this happened in the last seconds of the bout when the local athlete had a 3-2 lead.

With this triumph, Venezuela earned its second gold in Karate at Santiago 2023, following Yorgelis Del Carmen Salazar's victory in the female's -50kg category. Additionally, the Venezuelan team secured one silver and two bronze medals in the discipline.

In the overall medal tally for Santiago 2023, Venezuela currently holds the tenth position with eight gold medals, 15 bronze medals, and 20 silver medals, totaling 43 medals at these Pan American Games.
