Saturday, November 4th, 2023.- Colombia capitalized on a brilliant start and doubts from the United States to build an insurmountable lead and win the mixed team compound archery final at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games this afternoon at the Peñalolén Park Archery Center.
The duo of Sara López Bueno, the world's number one among women, and Jagdeep Singh, gained an advantage with a perfect score in the first two sets of the gold medal match, rendering Kris Schaaf and Alexis Ruiz's comeback efforts in the fourth set futile. Colombia emerged victorious with a final score of 156 to 150, seeking revenge for their loss to the Americans in the final at the previous Lima 2019 Games.
Singh, originally from Risaralda, just like Sara López, explained the joy of winning the title alongside the renowned archer: "I've known Sara for 11 years, and she's been my mentor. Winning with her and becoming Pan American champions is a dream. I'm satisfied that we did the job we were asked to do. It's not pressure, but whenever you're beside Sara, you know you have to give 120 percent."
With this result, Colombia secured its first gold medal and climbed to second place in the specific medal standings, surpassing El Salvador. Meanwhile, the United States has now won three titles out of a total of five events in this discipline, which will conclude on Sunday with the recurve team and individual female and male competitions.
Earlier in the day, the Americans defeated Colombia in the compound female's team event and Mexico in the recurve female's and male's team events, while El Salvador surprised everyone by capturing the gold in the compound male's team event, beating the favored American team.
